Premessa. Quando si assiste al concerto di un’artista con una carriera lunga e riconoscibile come quella di Beth Orton, la domanda inevitabile riguarda il rapporto con il tempo: cosa rimane, cosa cambia, quale traccia lascia il passare degli anni sulla voce e sulla presenza scenica. La risposta arrivata da Villa Durazzo Bombrini, nell’ambito del Lilith Festival, è stata questa: abbiamo ancora in giro un’artista pienamente capace di dare peso alle proprie canzoni.
L’inizio del set con “Friday Night” ha mostrato una Beth Orton inizialmente alla ricerca del giusto equilibrio, come se la voce dovesse ancora trovare la dimensione ideale all’interno dello spazio e del suono. Un passaggio breve, superato il quale la cantautrice britannica ha progressivamente espresso tutta la naturalezza della sua interpretazione. Perché è stata soprattutto la voce a guidare il concerto genovese: un timbro maturato negli anni, più asciutto e segnato rispetto agli esordi, ma ancora dotato di quella capacità di comunicare vulnerabilità e intensità senza bisogno di forzature. Beth Orton ha conservato una qualità che ha sempre caratterizzato il suo percorso: la capacità di rendere ogni brano personale, quasi abitato dall’interno, trasformando anche il repertorio più lontano nel tempo in qualcosa di presente.
Le canzoni del passato non sono apparse come frammenti di una stagione conclusa, ma come composizioni ancora in grado di dialogare con l’oggi grazie a una lettura vocale e interpretativa rimasta profondamente riconoscibile.

When attending the concert of an artist with a long and distinctive career like Beth Orton’s, the inevitable question concerns the relationship with time: what remains, what changes, what mark the passing years leave on the voice and stage presence. The answer that came from Villa Durazzo Bombrini, as part of the Lilith Festival, was clear: we still have an artist among us who is fully capable of giving weight and depth to her songs.
The beginning of the set with “Friday Night” showed a Beth Orton initially searching for the right balance, as if her voice still needed to find the ideal dimension within the space and the sound. A brief moment, after which the British singer-songwriter progressively expressed the full naturalness of her interpretation. Because it was above all her voice that guided the Genoa show: a tone matured over the years, drier and more marked compared to her early days, yet still able to communicate vulnerability and intensity without the need for any kind of excess. Beth Orton has preserved a quality that has always defined her career: the ability to make every song personal, almost inhabited from within, transforming even the oldest parts of her repertoire into something present.
The songs from the past did not appear as fragments of a finished chapter, but as compositions still able to resonate today, thanks to a vocal and interpretative approach that has remained deeply recognizable.
