Davvero un bel concerto, quello a cui abbiamo assistito a Parigi. Dan Black si è esibito al Le Pop-Up du Label, in un contesto raccolto, quasi domestico, che ha subito dato la misura di uno spettacolo pensato come un incontro ravvicinato più che come una messa in scena da club. Un live “da salotto”, per pochi amici, dove anche qualche sbavatura tecnica ha trovato una sua ragione d’essere: Black ha gestito senza nervosismi i piccoli problemi che la tecnologia gli ha messo davanti, adattandosi a uno spazio che, chiaramente, non era quello di un grande palco. Poco male.
La prima cosa che ha colpito, però, è stata la vitalità dell’artista inglese. Dan Black ha 50 anni, eppure sul palco sembra muoversi fuori dal tempo: tratti ancora sorprendentemente giovani, ma soprattutto una presenza scenica solida, naturale. La prestazione vocale è ancora uno dei suoi punti forti: intonazione sempre centrata, controllo delle tonalità, nessuna forzatura inutile.
Il concerto si è aperto alla grande con “Pump My Pumps” e si è chiuso con una versione intensa di “Liquify”. In mezzo, una scaletta generosa di hit: “Symphonies”, “Orchestra”, “Cells”, “I’m Lost”, fino a un accenno in chiave acida e lisergica di “Who Said” dei Planet Funk, citazione che il pubblico ha riconosciuto subito.
Dan Black ha confermato a Parigi un’umanità rara e un talento che non ha bisogno di sovrastrutture. E a fine concerto, senza distanza né pose, eccolo al banchetto del merchandising a parlare con i fan. Dettagli, certo. Ma sono proprio questi a raccontare, meglio di tutto, la statura di un artista che non è arrivato ieri.

A truly fine concert, the one we attended in Paris. Dan Black took the stage at Le Pop-Up du Label, in an intimate, almost domestic setting that immediately framed the show as a close encounter rather than a club-style performance. A “living room” live set, for a small circle of people, where even a few technical glitches found their own justification: Black handled without tension the minor issues caused by the technology, adapting to a space that was clearly not meant for a large stage. No real problem.
The first thing that stood out, however, was the vitality of the English artist. Dan Black is 50 years old, yet on stage he seems to move outside of time: still surprisingly youthful features, but above all a solid, natural stage presence. His vocal performance remains one of his strong points: pitch always on target, full control of the tonal range, no unnecessary forcing.
The concert opened in great style with “Pump My Pumps” and closed with an intense version of “Liquify”. In between, a generous run of hits: “Symphonies”, “Orchestra”, “Cells”, “I’m Lost”, up to an acid, slightly psychedelic nod to “Who Said” by Planet Funk, a reference the audience immediately recognized.
In Paris, Dan Black confirmed a rare sense of humanity and a talent that needs no superstructure. And at the end of the show, with no distance or posing, there he was at the merchandise table, talking with fans. Small details, perhaps. But they are precisely what best convey the stature of an artist who did not arrive yesterday.
