È incredibile come Ethel Cain riesca a trascinarti da un pezzo catartico e intenso come “Tempest” a uno più pop come “Crush”, cambiando stato d’animo nel giro di venti minuti. La sua musica alterna continuamente emozioni e attitudini, come se tutto il mondo e il suo contrario trovassero spazio nelle sue canzoni.
Sul palco dell’Alcatraz di Milano, per la sua prima data italiana (sold out da diverso tempo), si è presentata con una felpa con la scritta “Perverts”, il titolo del suo album uscito a gennaio, e il cappuccio calato sulla testa. Ha subito trasmesso un’impressione di fragilità – svanita non appena ha iniziato a cantare. La sua voce è un dualismo costante: sa essere eterea e intima, ma anche capace di colpire con una forza inaspettata.
L’Alcatraz si è riempito presto di giovanissimi, una marea di under 20 in attesa di vedere e capire meglio cosa gira attorno a Ethel Cain. Il segreto del suo successo? Probabilmente sta nel fatto che non si lascia rinchiudere in un genere. Dal vivo mescola post-rock, americana, cantautorato intimo, echi di Lana del Rey, trip pop, drone, pop. Resta sospesa in una bolla tutta sua, e probabilmente è per questo che i suoi fan ci si ritrovano: trovano intimità e al tempo stesso entusiasmo.
L’artista statunitense ha dimostrato di essere in una lunga fase di crescita importante. Il set è risultato a tratti un po’ troppo costruito, ma la qualità è stata assoluta. Chi ha speso i soldi del biglietto è tornato a casa con la sensazione di aver vissuto qualcosa di vero e di aver fatto un buon investimento.
La serata milanese ha confermato una cosa: Ethel Cain rappresenta una figura autentica, una delle poche voci davvero interessanti oggi, capace di mescolare con naturalezza la sua storia personale con una fortissima carica emotiva.

On stage at Alcatraz in Milan for her first Italian date (which had been sold out for some time), she appeared in a sweatshirt with “Perverts” written on it—the title of her album released in January—with the hood pulled over her head. She immediately gave an impression of fragility, but it vanished as soon as she started to sing. Her voice is a constant dualism: it can be ethereal and intimate, but also capable of striking with unexpected force.
Alcatraz quickly filled with very young people, a sea of under-20s waiting to see and better understand what the buzz around Ethel is all about. The secret to her success? It probably lies in the fact that she doesn’t let herself be confined to a single genre. Live, she mixes post-rock, Americana, intimate singer-songwriter vibes, echoes of Lana del Rey, trip-pop, drone, and pop. She remains suspended in a bubble of her own, and this is likely why her fans relate so much: they find both intimacy and enthusiasm.
The American artist showed she is in an important and long phase of growth. The set felt a bit too constructed at times, but the quality was absolute. Those who spent money on a ticket went home with the feeling of having experienced something real and having made a good investment.
The evening in Milan confirmed one thing: Ethel Cain represents an authentic figure, one of the few truly interesting voices out there today, capable of naturally blending her personal story with a powerful emotional charge.
