I’M NOT A BLONDE 11 (The Art Of Being A Couple)
“11 (The Art Of Being a Couple)” is like walking into a room where the light is low, the breath is slow, and the electronics both shake and caress. This is the new album by I’m Not a Blonde, an Italian-American duo from Milan, formed by Chiara Castello and Camilla Benedini, released by INRI Records.
The tracklist is a thrilling ups and downs of emotions. The opening track “To Fall” immediately sets the coordinates: the electronics are not here to shock, but to welcome, hold, embrace. It’s a magnetic song that invites you to slip into a maternal womb, with echoes of cinematic music (for example the “Blade Runner” soundtrack) and something of Antony and the Johnsons. With “Scegli Me”, Rachele Bastreghi of Baustelle steps in: intriguing synths outline a slightly retro pop, with an immediate grip already on the first listen. “Hip Hop in the Fog” is acidic, super sexy and super strange, as if it came out of Stromae’s mind; quiet verses and a chorus that pumps gasoline into the engine. “A Place to Call Home” plays on the same verse/chorus contrast, but with a melodically richer refrain. “Pony” offers another solid atmosphere.
The album moves mainly in English, but Italian is there and feels especially in the finale: “Questa Lingua” shows interesting potential, and “Circe” is another great track. The sonic journey closes with “Fissa Fissa”, still in Italian: a nervous, very sensual track with huge pop potential; after a couple of listens it makes you say “boom, what fucking crazy stuff”.
Throughout the album there is a ability to handle pop in a sophisticated and modern way that impresses: nothing is brazen or tacky, everything dosed to perfection. If it were a film, we’d have aesthetics, form and substance, photography, plot and direction.

“11 (The Art Of Being a Couple)” è come entrare in una stanza dove la luce è bassa, il respiro è lento e l’elettronica scuote e accarezza. È così il nuovo album di I’m Not a Blonde, duo italiano-americano di Milano, formato da Chiara Castello e Camilla Benedini, pubblicato da INRI Records.
La scaletta è un bel saliscendi di emozioni. L’iniziale “To Fall” dà subito le coordinate: l’elettronica non serve a scioccare, ma ad accogliere, trattenere, abbracciare. È un brano magnetico, che ti invita a scivolare in un grembo materno, con echi di musica cinematografica (ad esempio la colonna sonora di “Blade Runner”) e qualcosa di Antony and the Johnsons. Con “Scegli Me” entra in scena Rachele Bastreghi dei Baustelle: synth intriganti delineano un pop leggermente rétro, con una presa immediata già al primo ascolto. “Hip Hop in the Fog” è acido, super sexy e super strano, sembra uscito dalla mente di Stromae; strofe quiete e un ritornello che pompa benzina nel motore. “A Place to Call Home” gioca sullo stesso contrasto strofe/ritornello, ma con un refrain melodicamente più ricco. “Pony” offre un’altra atmosfera solida.
Il disco si muove prevalentemente in inglese, ma l’italiano c’è e si sente soprattutto nel finale: “Questa Lingua” mostra un potenziale interessante, e “Circe” è un altro ottimo pezzo. Il viaggio sonoro si chiude con “Fissa Fissa”, ancora in italiano: una traccia nervosa, molto sensuale, con un enorme potenziale pop; dopo un paio di ascolti ti fa dire “boom, che roba pazzesca”.
In tutto il disco c’è una capacità di maneggiare il pop in modo sofisticato e moderno che ben impressiona: nulla è sfacciato o pacchiano, tutto dosato alla perfezione. Se fosse un film, avremmo estetica, forma e sostanza, fotografia, trama e regia.
