PEARL JAM Ten

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life / I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky” (“Black”)

Nato nel 1990 sulle ceneri dei Mother Love Bone e dalla tragedia della morte di Andrew Wood, “Ten” dei Pearl Jam nasce dall’onda emotiva dei demo strumentali di Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament che cercarono nella musica una via d’uscita dal dolore per la perdita dell’amico. Aiutati dal chitarrista Mike McCready e dal batterista Matt Cameron (in prestito dai Soundgarden), nascevano i “Stone Gossard Demos”, che arriveranno sotto forma di cassetta fino a San Diego, ad un giovane Eddie Vedder.

In una notte, mentre lavorava in una stazione di servizio, Vedder ascoltò il nastro e ne rimase folgorato. In preda a un flusso di coscienza e ispirato dalla sua storia personale (la scoperta che l’uomo che lo aveva cresciuto non era il suo vero padre), compose e registrò i testi per tre brani (“Alive”, “Once” e “Footsteps”), creando quella che definì la mini-opera “Momma-Son”. Nascevano i Pearl Jam.

A differenza dello stile ruvido e vibrante del Seattle Sound, “Ten” (registrato ai London Bridge Studio e coadiuvati dal produttore Rick Parashar) presentava un’architettura sonora più vicina al classic rock, grazie agli assoli maestosi di McCready o al mixaggio di Tim Palmer. Le liriche di Vedder, tuttavia, portavano una carica emotiva e una profondità tematica senza precedenti, esplorando l’emarginazione, la follia e il disagio sociale.

I Pearl Jam salirono alla ribalta solo nella primavera del 1992, in piena Grunge-mania, trainati da brani come “Even Flow”, “Jeremy” (quest’ultima canzone corredata da un discusso videoclip che andò in heavy-rotation su MTV) o la straziante ballata “Black”. Il successo travolgente di “Ten” finì per destabilizzare Eddie Vedder, che iniziò a mostrare una crescente riluttanza verso l’esposizione mediatica mainstream, una tensione che avrebbe forgiato l’integrità e le scelte future dei Pearl Jam.

Sebbene “Ten” non rappresenti appieno la futura direzione artistica della band (che cercherà nei successivi dischi un approccio più crudo e rabbioso) rimane una pietra miliare della musica degli anni ’90 e di una stagione musicale iconica per un’intera generazione.

Born in 1990 from the ashes of Mother Love Bone and the tragedy of Andrew Wood‘s death, Pearl Jam‘s “Ten” stems from the emotional wave of instrumental demos by Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, who sought in music a way out of the grief for the loss of their friend. Aided by guitarist Mike McCready and drummer Matt Cameron (on loan from Soundgarden), the “Stone Gossard Demos” took shape, eventually reaching a young Eddie Vedder in San Diego on a cassette tape.

One night, while working at a gas station, Vedder listened to the tape and was blown away. Caught in a stream of consciousness and inspired by his own personal story (discovering the man who raised him was not his biological father), he wrote and recorded lyrics for three songs (“Alive”, “Once”, and “Footsteps”), creating what he called the “Momma-Son” mini-opera. Pearl Jam was born.

Unlike the rough and vibrant style of the Seattle Sound, “Ten” (recorded at London Bridge Studio with the help of producer Rick Parashar) featured a sonic architecture closer to classic rock, thanks to McCready’s majestic solos and Tim Palmer‘s mixing. Vedder’s lyrics, however, carried an unprecedented emotional weight and thematic depth, exploring marginalization, madness, and social distress.

Pearl Jam only rose to prominence in the spring of 1992, at the peak of Grunge-mania, driven by tracks like “Even Flow”, “Jeremy” (the latter accompanied by a controversial music video that went into heavy rotation on MTV), and the heartbreaking ballad “Black”. The overwhelming success of “Ten” eventually destabilized Eddie Vedder, who began to show a growing reluctance toward mainstream media exposure—a tension that would forge Pearl Jam’s integrity and future choices.

Although “Ten” doesn’t fully represent the band’s future artistic direction (they would seek a rawer, angrier approach in their subsequent records), it remains a milestone of nineties music and an iconic musical era for an entire generation.
