“It’s Just a Kiss-Off” is the debut of The Del-Viles, a trio from Minneapolis active since 2021. Here one senses the desire not to limit everything to pure entertainment, but to add depth without weighing down the result. “I Hate You” deserves special mention: it begins with the flavour of 1970s rock’n’roll and grows into a burst of energy. It is a song meant for the stage, to be sung at the top of one’s lungs, and represents one of the album’s peaks, in our view. The closing track “River Seine” lowers the volume: atmosphere and quiet, a descent toward the end that does not lash out but accompanies.
Overall, “It’s Just a Kiss-Off” contains 11 tracks in 32 minutes: no dispersion, a deliberate choice of brevity and impact. It looks to the past to refresh it, not to copy it, and tries to speak both to garage rock nostalgics and to a younger audience. A debut that is how the best debuts should be: it says a lot about the potential, and also that there is still energy waiting to be brought to the surface.
